Abstract

This study is motivated by the modern social phenomenon of requesting "gratitude money" or accepting remuneration outside of official regulations a practice that has become widespread in society. Such practices often occupy a gray area between voluntary tokens of appreciation and unspoken demands that risk crossing into the realm of illicit gratuities or bribery (*risywah*), thereby potentially tarnishing the value of sincerity in good deeds. This research employs a descriptive qualitative design utilizing a literature review methodology. It adopts a Thematic Exegesis (*Tafsir Maudhu’i*) approach to gather and analyze relevant Quranic verses, alongside a phenomenological approach to understand the consciousness underlying the human actions involved in this phenomenon of seeking remuneration. Primary data sources include the Holy Quran, *Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim* by Ibn Kathir, and *Tafsir al-Misbah* by M. Quraish Shihab. The findings indicate that the Quran does not absolutely prohibit the practice of seeking remuneration, provided it remains within the bounds of legitimate social and economic transactions (*muamalah*). The Quran distinguishes between legitimate wages (*ujrah*) based on clear agreements, professionalism, and the qualities of *al-qawiy* (strength/competence) and *al-amin* (trustworthiness), as illustrated in Surah Al-Qasas (28:26–27) and other forms of compensation. Conversely, the Quran strongly emphasizes the value of sincerity through the narratives of prophets who sought no material reward while carrying out their missions of *da'wah* (preaching) and social service (Surah Yasin: 21 and Ash-Shu'ara: 109). Consequently, this study affirms that seeking remuneration is permissible if it is grounded in a transparent and fair agreement, commensurate with the services rendered, and free from coercion. Conversely, soliciting remuneration is prohibited when it involves exploiting one's position, entails an element of coercion, or aims to secure special treatment amounting to bribery. The fundamental principle to be upheld is the balance between professional rights and the purity of intention and moral integrity.
