Abstract

This study is motivated by the prevalence of wives and mothers working outside the home to provide for their families whether to fully meet household needs or merely to cover shortfalls that the husband or father is unable to address. While Surah Al-Baqarah (2:233) of the Qur’an establishes that the husband or father bears the responsibility for providing both material and non-material support (nafkah) to the family, the reality in contemporary society often stands in stark contrast to this principle. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the concept of providing support as outlined in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:233) regarding the party responsible for family maintenance. The study employs a library research methodology utilizing a thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu’i) approach. Primary data sources consist of Qur’anic verses addressing nafkah specifically Surah Al-Baqarah (2:233) supported by exegetical works such as Tafsir al-Tabari by Ibn Jarir al-Tabari and Tafsir al-Munir by Wahbah al-Zuhaili. Data analysis proceeded through stages of verse collection, interpretation, semantic analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the husband or father is the one responsible for providing family support both material and non-material as the duty is assigned to him; conversely, the wife and mother bears no obligation to provide such support, even when covering needs that the husband or father is unable to meet.
